Defense Rests…..

The defense rested on Thursday in the Casey Anthony murder trial while she chose not to take the stand in her defense.  Casey’s attorney’s spent the last week trying to poke holes in the prosecutions circumstantial case against Anthony.  Probably most damaging to the prosecution was the testimony from Krystal Holloway who testified that while having an affair with Casey’s dad, George Anthony, that he admitted to her that little Caylee’s death was an accident that had snowballed out of control.

The prosecution will now put on a rebuttal case that is expected to last about a day. Closing arguments would follow, probably on Saturday, and the jury would then get the case that evening or Sunday.

The pundits are speculating now and there doesn’t seem to be an overall consensus of how this jury will rule.  But one thing they all do agree on is Casey will be charged with at minimum aggregated manslaughter and it is highly unlikely she will be put to death should she be convicted of first degree murder.

One of the most disturbing things about this case was Casey Anthony’s demeanor after her two year old daughter had “accidently” drowned.  Casey was repeatedly seen partying with friends and out shopping as if nothing had happened.  So whether her poor daughter drowned or Casey deliberately killed her there is something horribly, mentally wrong with this woman.

Pulitzer-Winning Jounalist Admits He’s An Illegal Immigrant

A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who covered presidential politics and the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings for The Washington Post is going on network television to announce he is an illegal immigrant.

Jose Antonio Vargas tells ABC News in interviews airing Thursday and Friday that he is outing himself as one of millions of illegal U.S. immigrants after living with the secret for years. He also told his story in a New York Times Magazine essay published online Wednesday.

“I’m done running. I’m exhausted,” Vargas wrote. “I don’t want that life anymore.”

He referred a request for comment to his public relations team, which did not immediately make him available Wednesday.

He said in the interviews with ABC that he wants to push Congress to pass a bill called the DREAM Act that would allow people like himself who came to this country as children to become citizens.

When Vargas was 12 and living in the Philippines, his mother took him to the airport and sent him to California to live with his grandparents, he said. He didn’t know about his citizenship status until four years later, when he applied for a driver’s permit and handed a clerk his green card.

“This is fake,” a Department of Motor Vehicles clerk said, according to Vargas’ account. “Don’t come back here again.”

Vargas confronted his grandfather, who acknowledged he purchased the green card and other fake documents.

“I remember the very first instinct was, OK, that’s it, get rid of the accent,” Vargas told ABC. “Because I just thought to myself, you know, I couldn’t give anybody any reason to ever doubt that I’m an American.”

He convinced himself that if he worked hard enough and achieved enough, he would be rewarded with citizenship, Vargas wrote in the magazine piece.

His grandfather imagined the fake documents would help Vargas get low-wage jobs. College seemed out of reach, until Vargas told Mountain View High School Principal Pat Hyland and school district Superintendent Rich Fisher about his problem. They became mentors and surrogate parents, eventually finding a scholarship fund for high-achieving students that allowed him to attend San Francisco State University.

Vargas was hired for internships at The San Francisco Chronicle and the Philadelphia Daily News. He was denied an internship at The Seattle Times because he didn’t have all the documents they required. But he kept applying and got an offer from The Washington Post.

The newspaper required a driver’s license, so Vargas said his network of mentors helped him get one from Oregon, which has less stringent requirements than some other states.

Once hired full-time at the Post, he used the fake license to cover Washington events, including a state dinner at the White House, Vargas recalled.

He wrote that he was nearly paralyzed with anxiety that his secret would be found out at the Post. He tried to avoid reporting on immigration policy, but at times, it was impossible. At one point, he wrote about then-Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s position on driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants.

Vargas eventually told his mentor, Peter Perl, now the newspaper’s training director. Perl told him that once he had accomplished more, they would tell then-Editor Leonard Downie Jr. and Post Chairman Don Graham together. They kept the secret until Vargas left the paper.

On Wednesday, Washington Post spokeswoman Kris Coratti strongly condemned their actions.

“What Jose did was wrong. What Peter did was wrong,” Coratti said, declining to comment further on personnel matters. “We are also reviewing our internal procedures, and we believe this was an isolated incident of deception.”

An e-mail seeking comment was sent to Perl.

Vargas shared a Pulitzer Prize for the Post’s coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings. A 2006 series he wrote on the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Washington inspired a documentary film. Last year, he wrote a profile of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg for The New Yorker.

Most recently, he was a senior contributing editor at Huffington Post. He said he left after less than a year and was worried professionally about a looming deadline: the expiration of his 8-year-old Oregon driver’s license.

Just before he turned 30 this year, Vargas said he obtained a Washington state driver’s license, which would have given him a five-year reprieve — and meant five more years of lying. He said he couldn’t deal with that.

On Wednesday, Vargas launched a campaign called Define American to use stories of immigrants like himself with a goal to “elevate the national discourse” with an honest dialogue about immigration. His high school principal and superintendent have signed on as board members.

Commentary:

I found this story to be very interesting and honestly a little inspirational.  His story is the  the American Dream, a story of many that has given birth to this great country.  Although,  the immigration fight today is not about people like Mr. Vargas.  It’s about the millions of illegals that come to this country committing crimes, recruiting gang members and pull from the system.  It’s about controlling the madness that is going on at our border crossings, drug and human smuggling, and murder.  I feel for Mr. Vargas and he is a man that despite many hardships went on to become a productive member of society.  I have to ask though, did he ever try to acquire citizenship?  He doesn’t mention that, only that he acquired fake documentation.  I wonder if he had tried to go through the proper channels if he would be able to call himself an American Citizen today?  I doubt that he will be at risk for deportation and this path may bring new light to the immigration issue but in reality it’s not people like Mr. Vargas that the American people are concerned about.  I wish him the best and keep up the great work, Mr. Vargas.  In my eyes you are an American citizen.

Game Of Thrones Shocker

Do you watch, what is sure to be an Emmy award winner, Game Of Thrones?  Well, if you do then you probably were shocked and horrified by Sunday’s episode.  Ned Stark, played by Sean Bean of Lord of the Rings, was beheaded by the orders of King Jaffrey.  Although the program was only taking its cues from the books that it is based on, much of the online community who wasn’t aware or still aware and didn’t think they’d ‘go there’, are outraged that Game of Thrones dismissed its main character so soon.

I was so disturbed by it I couldn’t even sleep.  Not only is Sean Bean the most famous actor of the show, his character was honorable and very likeable.  It was quite the twist that, regardless of the outrage of fans, executives of the show are standing by their decision.

Fans are feeling tricked by the marketing of Bean as the main character and what looked to be the hero of the series.  Now, he is dead and Sean Bean is no longer a part of the show.  Executives noted that Bean brought a huge following but the hero is no Bean but the story itself.

I agree with the above statement but I am still horribly upset that Ned Stark, Lord of Winterfell, is dead.  None the less, it is sure to be a fascinating season finale.

Homeward Bound

Amongst all the tragedy of the tornadoes that hit the South about a month ago a heartwarming story emerged today.  Mason, a small terrier dog, was swept away from his home in Alabama by the vicious tornadoes and had been missing for three weeks.  Naturally, based on the destruction the family’s home had endured, they assumed their dog had been killed in the storm.

Astonishingly, 21 days after the storm hit, Mason the little terrier returned to his family’s doorstep with two front broken legs.  It’s impossible to know how far he was thrown in that storm and how long he had been wandering the streets before he found his home once again.  Walking on, what is equivalent our elbows, he crawled back to his home to reunite with his family.

Delighted beyond belief his family immediately called animal control begging for their help with rescue of Mason.  Because their house had been destroyed they did not have the means to take care of Mason but with the help of animal control and a local Vet Mason was operated on and is resting comfortably.  Animal control spoke with the family and is hoping to permanently reunite with Mason in a week or so once their affairs are in order.

Truly a heart warming story of survival and loyalty.

Well It Wouldn’t Be A Blog Without An American Idol Update

Last night was the finale of Season 10 American Idol and “sweet cheeks” Scotty McCreery won the crown.  Up against Scotty was his country cohort, Lauren Alaina.  Both have strong country roots and it certainly felt like watching a country concert on Tuesday night.

Throughout the season there were some shocking elimination results such as Pia Toscano, Hailey Reinhart and my favorite, James Durbin.  All three singers were, in my opinion stronger singers than the two finalist but may have struggled finding a loyal base.  Pia, although one of the best singers, bored me with her stage presence but I believe she will be a rockin radio pop star.  James will surely go on to do great things.  You can’t have that type of range and sing a Judas Priest song better than Judas Priest and not have an outstanding career.  Hailey, is incredibly unique but I’m not sure which genre she will flourish in and that may have been her problem to begin with.

So it came down to two very young contestants who both soared in the country genre.  That in itself is interesting and goes to show the type of audience that watches American Idol.  And who couldn’t love those two.  Both were so sweet and wholesome and there is certainly nothing wrong with that.  In fact, I appreciate it.

Although my favorite did not win, it was obvious once James was eliminated who was going to win.  Scotty “McHottie” had it in the bag.  It will be fun to watch him blossom over the years much like the homely Carrie Underwood did turning herself into super stardom Country Diva she is today. The fact of the matter is, no matter who wins and who loses American Idol is the spring board for many to a long and prosperous career.   Congrats Scotty!

Tornado Devastation Once Again

I have to say I was shocked today when I pulled up Fox News and saw complete devastation in parts of Missouri.  I couldn’t believe that once again, only a month later, we were seeing such severe weather patterns that were literally wiping out large portions of cities.

I realize everything is cyclical but it is extremely disturbing to see such destruction across the world month after month.  Wasn’t it just in March when Japan had a devastating Tsunami, then in late April the South endured violent tornadoes and now in May we see such destruction once again.

While Judgment Day did not surface on May 21, 2011 sometimes you have to think that maybe God and Mother Nature are a little pissed.  If there were any of Harold Camping’s followers in Missouri that Sunday I’m sure they thought God was a calling, albeit a day late.

While I’m sure you will have some say it’s due to Global Warming, oops I mean Climate Change while others will say it’s a just a prelude to what is coming from God’s wrath.  I personally think it’s just a weather pattern based on cyclical data but whatever it is, I do feel awful for all the families, people, and businesses crushed by these forceful storms of nature.  Let’s hope we get a reprieve soon.

For All You Tactical Junkies Out There

Ok, so tactical gear seems to be the latest and greatest thing.  Maybe it’s our current involvement overseas or our patriotic cheering of bin Laden’s demise but whatever it is, tactical equipment seems to be on the rise.

There are a lot of different pieces of tactical gear to choose from. Anything from tactical pants to tactical knives but I have to say that tactical watches might be the coolest piece of gear for all you tactical junkies.

My favorite is the Field Ops watch by 5.11 Tactical.  The Field Ops watch has all of the features needed for day to day activities and includes the revolutionary SureShot® calculator. 5.11 partnered with Horus Vision to combine this multi-faceted watch with true ballistic software accessible on your wrist.  It gives you the ability to input thirteen critical variables needed for long range shooting solutions quickly and easily. Pretty cool if you ask me.

I had to share what Outdoor Mike from Tennessee said about his Field Ops watch.  Pretty funny Mike!

“I work in a very rough and high energy environment and I have been through 12 watches in the past 8yrs, Then I got this Field Ops watch and 2yrs later it’s still going strong and works great.I have been in multiple fights at work with this watch on, hunted in the snow and fishing in the ocean and this watch is perfect for everything.”

Rock on!

Slow Economy Equals Long Lines

Have you noticed with this non-existent economy comes a new expense and I’m not talking about outrageous gas prices or skyrocketing food prices (although that is topic for a whole other discussion).  I’m talking about Father Time.

Today, I needed to pick up a project from FedEx Kinkos.  When I pulled into the parking lot of the mini mall there was an eery feeling.  Vacant store fronts were all around and very few cars were there in the parking lot.  You could tell the economy had a done a doozie on many of the businesses in this particular mini mall.  There was a Subway then three vacant properties, a Jackson Hewilitt Tax preparer, another vacant building and then Kinkos.  It left me feeling sad but not for long because my sadness then turned to annoyance.

I walked into Kinkos and there was a man already waiting in line.  There was one girl up at the counter being helped.  This man and I kept looking around waiting for a rush of employees to come out from the back to help us but no one ever surfaced.  Two other men entered and waited in line with us.  Still the one girl was being helped at the counter.  Four more people came in and were waiting in line and finally the manager surfaced assuring everyone she would be right with us.  Really?  Because I have now been waiting for 15 minutes and no one has been “right with me”.

Finally after almost 20 minutes of waiting in line, it was my turn.  Naturally I was very annoyed.  I was on my lunch break and was going to have to bypass Wal-Mart to pick up some cat food as I was already running late. Sorry cats!

I wasn’t really interested in their excuses as to why I had to wait so long because this was something I was seeing over and over again.  Kinkos wasn’t the only culprit.  I have noticed this same phenomenon in grocery stores, concession stands at the theaters, and my favorite restaurants.  Everyone is cutting back which leaves the customer not only with higher prices but with longer wait times.

The pundits keep saying we are one the road to recovery but I have to say I’m not seeing it.  So get used to paying higher prices for EVERYTHING and be prepared to wait longer to get your high priced items to boot.
